You must first form an LLC in Florida before applying for your EIN.
EIN stands for Employer Identification Number. It is a 9 digit number issued by the IRS to newly formed businesses.
An EIN is also called a Federal Tax ID Number. However, we will refer to it is your Florida EIN.
EINs are used for:
- Opening business bank accounts
- Filing taxes
- Handling employee payroll (if applicable)
- Obtaining business lines of credit of business loans
- Signing up for credit cards in the name of the LLC
- Applying for business licenses
Although it is called an Employer Identification Number, that does not necessarily mean that the business has to have employees.
Many LLCs are one-person operations, called single-member LLCs. These Florida LLCs do not have employees. So they won’t be using their EIN for things like withholding employee taxes or creating an employee retirement plan. However, they still need an EIN, because all LLCs in Florida need to have their own EIN when filing their taxes.
An EIN is essentially a “Social Security Number” for a business. And like Social Security Numbers, EINs consist of a series of nine digits. The numbers are written in a slightly different format, however, to help people tell the difference between an EIN and a Social Security Number.
EINs appear with two leading digits, a dash, then the remaining seven digits like this: 00-0000000.
Each EIN issued by the government is unique. They do not expire and they never get re-issued.
